Designed as the lexical companion to Wikipedia, the encyclopaedia project, Wiktionary has grown beyond a standard dictionary and now includes a thesaurus, a rhyme guide, phrase books, language statistics and extensive appendices. We aim to include not only the definition of a word, but also enough information to really understand it. Thus etymologies, pronunciations, sample quotations, synonyms, antonyms and translations are included. Child abandonment is the practice of relinquishing interests and claims over one's offspring with the intent of never again resuming or reasserting it. Causes include many social and cultural factors as well as mental illness. An abandoned child is called a foundling (as opposed to a runaway or an orphan). CausesPoverty is often a root cause of child abandonment. Persons in cultures with poor social welfare systems who are not financially capable of taking care of a child are more likely to abandon him/her. Political conditions, such as difficulty in adoption proceedings, may also contribute to child abandonment, as can the lack of institutions, such as orphanages, to take in children whom their parents cannot support. Societies with strong social structures and liberal adoption laws tend to have lower rates of child abandonment. HistoryHistorically, many cultures practice abandonment of infants, called "exposure." Although such children would survive if taken up by others, exposure is often considered a form of infanticide—as described by Tertullian in his Apology: "it is certainly the more cruel way to kill. . . by exposure to cold and hunger and dogs." Medieval laws in Europe governing child abandonment, as for example the Visgothic Code, often prescribed that the person who had taken up the child was entitled to the child's service as a slave. Q. A 5-year-old child is left alone at table in the mall for 5 or 6 hours. This parent has no contact with the child during that time and isn't even necessarily nearby (not within seeing or hearing distance). What are the laws for that child? Is that considered abandonment? Could a parent get arrested for that? Fined? What would happen? Asked by Anna Silverheart - Wed Apr 15 06:42:30 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yes. A child under the age of 12 cannot be left alone anywhere even at home. Parent can be arrested and child placed in foster care. Asked by GAmom - Wed Mar 3 13:53:51 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments In the cases of legal child abandonment, if there is no name left, how do they further process the children?
Q. I realize for the older kids, they can tell them their names but what about the infants. Do they give an educated guess for the birth date? And would the children have the option of contacting their parents? Asked by a chick - Mon Oct 20 09:31:42 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I think with infants, it is pretty much a guessing game. They have to "guesstimate" their age and usually the hospital will give them a name. In the case of abandonment, if the parent comes forward, they may be able to have contact once the parent proves that they have received counseling or something .
